Alright, folks. Here is my book review for the month of June. Apologies, I've just got the one this month. Got married, been dealing with my first trimester of pregnancy, and finances have been lean because I'm trying to put away whatever money is left of my paycheck for the upcoming unpaid maternity leave and the house fund. Haven't been able to afford audiobooks and my lazy butt keeps forgetting to get a library card so I can utilize the Libby app. Looking forward to July, I've got a pre-order from Sharon Sala coming in (in fact as I'm doing final edits, today is the day)! :) Also, sorry this is coming so late in the month compared to others. Anyway. Let's dive in.

Books listened to in June 2024:

1. Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing by Matthew Perry

I must have lived under a rock, but I had no idea that Matthew Perry struggled both with drug addiction and alcoholism. He really struggled with it, pretty much to the end of his life, and he also really fought like hell to beat it all. He went through a ton of health scares too, which I had no idea about. Some of it was hard to listen to, just because it was intense, mainly I'm talking some of his hospitalizations and detoxing experiences. It's rough. Very well-written.

That said, I always liked him as an actor, and hearing him describe both his struggles and his life make me respect him all the more, and make me all the more sad that he's passed away. He had a surprising amount of insight on how his life growing up and the way his parents raised him affected him, without placing the blame, and recognizing all of the good they both did, too. He was so incredibly loving and kind towards his ex girlfriends, speaking nothing but good things about them and how some of them even helped him with his struggles. He had a surprising amount of maturity and awareness for why the relationships didn't work out, accepting blame where there was, or simply not being ready yet, or incompatibility where that was the issue. For all he's been through in 50-some odd years, he's incredibly humble, and not at all bitter, and very grateful for all he's had and experienced and survived. I really truly hope that in the last of his short time after he completed his autobiography, that he experienced nothing put peace and freedom from his addictions in the final year, year and a half of his life. What a sweet, kind soul. He is sorely missed.
